Cross-Atlantic tiff over the American torture scandal at Abu Ghraib

The US is having a hissy fit over media reports out of Britian regarding the ABUSE at Abu Ghraib.

White House Press secretary is in a snit:

Robert Gibbs, rattled by Telegraph story, lashes out at British press

This article from the Telegraph is alleged to be the source of consternation.
Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

The graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.

The 2004 report being mentioned is the Taguba report.

The Taguba report was released in 2004. Taguba alluded to the rape in this report, now he confirmed there are indeed photos of it.

The British Press is however firing back.

Robert Gibbs should apologise to the British press for his sneering rant

Robert Gibbs' completely unwarranted rant against the British press is an absolute disgrace, and the President should disown his views. An unreserved apology by Gibbs is also in order.

For all its talk of "raising America's standing" in the world after the Bush years, the Obama administration is doing a spectacularly bad job of reaching out to its allies. Unfortunately this is the new face of America's public diplomacy, which will only serve to alienate public opinion across the Atlantic. Congratulations Gibbs - you've just made an enemy out of the entire British media, quite an achievement for the man in charge of selling the President's message.

Don't shoot the messenger. The British Press delivered a report, they are standing by it.

The problem is all the abuse, the torture and the rapes of women and children, conducted under America's watch. That is the problem!

CSIS joins the RCMP as prevaricators (liars)

We've got to see rcmp prevaricate liberally regarding the killing at the airport, and there was misleading with Arar. Not to be left out of the lying loop, CSIS lied and concealed vital information for years in the case of terrorism suspect Mohamed Harkat.
How corrupt are these alleged law enforcement agencies?? How politically compromised are they?

Judge's ruling puts CSIS under cloud of doubt

The credibility of Canada's spy agency took a major hit yesterday when a Federal Court of Canada judge suggested that officials may have lied and intentionally concealed vital information for years in a case targeting terrorism suspect Mohamed Harkat.

Mr. Justice Simon Noel also ordered the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to give the name of a key source in the Harkat case and an uncensored file on him to special advocates charged with safeguarding Mr. Harkat's interests.

"This court will be reviewing all orders, issues and evidence provided to date in this proceeding to see if any further judicial action is required to preserve the integrity of the administration of justice," Judge Noel warned in his ruling. "This review will require the recalling of several CSIS witnesses."

Judge Noel's ruling came just two days after lawyers for CSIS gave him a "top secret letter" providing new information about the reliability of the source and conceding that it probably should have been disclosed earlier.

The judge said in his ruling that the information disclosed on Tuesday "raises questions in relation to possible prevarication by CSIS witnesses called to testify concerning the reliability of the information provided by the human source."

Germany Denies Patent for Cyanide Equipped RFID Chip

Germany has declined to patent a cyanide-equipped RFID chip developed in Saudi Arabia.

From German publication The Local:

A Saudi Arabian inventor has filed for a patent on a potentially lethal science fiction-style human tracking microchip, the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) told The Local on Friday.

But the macabre innovation that enables remote killing will likely be denied copyright protection.

I am going to repeat that, just so it is clear-
enables remote killing
enables remote killing

“While the application is still pending further paperwork on his part, the invention will probably be found to violate paragraph two of the German Patent Law – which does not allow inventions that transgress public order or good morals,” spokeswoman Stephanie Krüger told The Local from Munich.

The patent application – entitled “Implantation of electronic chips in the human body for the purposes of determining its geographical location” – was filed on October 30, 2007, but was only published until last week, or 18 months after submission as required by German law, she said.

So the patent was allegedly denied in Germany, will that really be the end of it? I doubt it !
Way too many hands would want to get a hold of that device.

I've always wondered about these free flu shots? Given year after year?
How easy would it be to chip the population via the free flu shots given en masse every year?

Recipe for strangeness: Laurel Canyon, 1 Bear, The Dead, MKultra and the Elite

Back briefly to The Bear, or Owsley Stanley the III, in the Laurel Canyon saga.

McGowan rightfully claims, The Bear, did more to turn the kids on to acid, by manufacturing and distributing, free of charge, many, many hits of acid. How many hits of acid you ask?
Quoted from "For the unrepentant patriarch of LSD, long, strange trip winds back to Bay Area"

By conservative estimates, Bear Research Group made more than 1.25 million doses of LSD between 1965 and 1967, essentially seeding the entire modern psychedelic movement.

He was certainly more hands on then main stream media icon of the acid movement. Mr. Tune in, Turn On, Drop Out -Timothy Leary. Whom, it should be noted seems to have benefited alot more from historical revisionism then he deserved.. But then, what else is new?

In later years Owsley Stanly distanced himself from Timothy Leary calling him the worst thing to ever happen to the psychedelic movement. I covered that in a previous post including info in the comments page on Leary's testimony in front of the Senate.

But, back to Owsley and a band he worked for. Or with perhaps? Quite likely at more then music making. The Grateful Dead. Yes, that Grateful Dead! Formed in the San Francisco Bay area in 1965. Say, that reminds me of another group formed in that same area, affiliates of the Grateful Dead one could say, but we will get to that later.....

Oh and one more thing, just a little side trip.
Since Bear Owlsey is notoriously camera shy I thought I would throw in this picture from his drug arraignment in 1967. Apparently one of a very few photos ever taken. He is now in his mid 70's.

Ok, now the Grateful Dead.
The anonymous person who got me going in this direction mentioned the fact the Grateful Dead, had initially been known as The Warlocks. Interesting. Maybe to obvious? Anyway the name got changed and the rest as they say, is history.

But what about the Grateful Dead? What a long, strange trip it's been for them.

Dave McGowan notes:

Owsley and his frequent sidekicks, the Grateful Dead, moved down to the Watts area of Los Angeles, of all places, to ostensibly conduct ‘acid tests.’ The group rented a house that was conveniently located right next door to a brothel, curiously paralleling the modus operandi of various intelligence operatives who were (or had been) involved in conducting their own ‘acid tests.’

Curious parallels for Owsley and The Dead, no? I mean, for the alleged paragons of the counter culture movement to be following in the footsteps of Big Brother, the CIA and mkultra.
Seems odd doesn't it? It does.
It also seems like it is right out of mkultra's Operation Midnight Climax!
And, yes that is it's actual name. Like a cheesy porn movie , which in a lot of ways, it was.
"Operation Midnight Climax was a series of CIA run brothels in San Francisco and New York. The operation paid prostitutes $100 a day to lure men into the net. The prostitutes spiked their Johns' drinks with LSD"

And the government agents and police watched! (getting their rocks off, no doubt)

Were the Grateful Dead and Owsley involved in covert ops?
Were they providing the cover for LSD experiments on unwitting citizens? Was Owsley providing the LSD? Were they providing the johns from amongst unwitting fans and assorted hangers-ons? It is pretty convenient. The acid for the unwitting subjects could be produced right next door. The subjects could be studied from right next door. And no one, and I mean NO ONE, would suspect a link between these counterculture giants and the CIA.
Hmmmm????

Then there is that other group formed in San Francisco, I mentioned them back in the beginning. Affiliates of the Grateful Dead. What group you ask? Some other esteemed musical band? Yeah, well if you were thinking that, you would be mistaken. It is a group that is considered a bastion of white male secret elitism. Complete with weird rituals, and heavy duty members amongst the political elites.
It is the The Bohemian Club. Yes, the Bohemian Club boasts Dead members, as their very own.
Isn't that interesting the counterculture boosters and the elites?
The leaders of the Dead Heads, and leaders of the World.
Members of the military industrial complex, and the Grateful Dead members who also maybe members of the military industrial complex?

Group Protests Dead Members' Bohemian Club Membership

Mike Weir and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead are members of the Bohemian Grove.
"The activists who protest the gathering of the Bohemian Club's all-male political elite and movers and shakers at the Bohemian Grove near Monte Rio each July claim Weir and former Dead percussionist Mickey Hart joined what they call "the Evil Empire" years ago."

Weird huh?

That was reported in 2006, but it goes even further back then that to 1998.
Letter to Bob Weir (Grateful Dead)
asking them not to be involved with the Bohemian weirdos.

Oh and this part:

"Hart bunks in the Hillbillies Camp with George Bush Sr. and Donald Rumsfeld and Weir resides in Rattlers Camp with Edmund Littlefield Jr., whose father is the former CEO of General Electric"

Grateful Dead band members bunking in with the likes of George Bush Sr and Rumsfeld and the former CEO of General Electric?

It is like they fit right in with the military industrial complex so well, they can see each other in their jammies, or maybe their undies? But then, thinking of Operation Midnight Climax.....
Maybe none of them got anything to hide.

Back to Laurel Canyon- Owsley and Timothy Leary

Someone who posted anonymously left an interesting comment in an older Dave McGowan post.

"Dave McGowan, Laurel Canyon, Mind Control via MK U...":

"Owsley came from, guess what, a wealthy, old politically powerful American family. He was taught how to cook by a, now famous, former Dow chemical employee who'd previously been in the Navy. What's interesting is that there was, apparently, also the daughter of the head of the chemical company that was also being taught how to do these complicated sequences at the same time (odd too how she never seems to get any press, don't you think ?). And, remember, the Greatful Dead we're previously called "The Warlocks." I don't think this makes psychedelics suspect, only the varying modes of application. But, right now, they want to demonize them for obvious reasons ! They're de-conditioning agents, for god's sake ! Check out "Acid Dreams" (Amis); "Storming Heaven" (Stevens); "The Dead"-book one (Harrison); "Boo-Hoo Bible" ; Bruce Eisner's Islands newsletter has some interesting interviews with Owsley."

A very intersting comment. I wish this person would have left the name of the woman who was taught to 'cook' the same as Owsley. That would have been interesting.

I agree that none of this is MKultra/mind control stuff is really about the LSD, except as the method to the means. The means being a way to control your thoughts.

I am assuming that by claiming LSD is a de-conditioning agent, the commenter means that LSD, was not useful as means to control or suppress people, but a way instead to open there eyes and make them less susceptible to societal conditioning. It is possible, but I don't know.
I did check out some of the subjects that anonymous poster left.

I found this interesting, an interview conducted between a writer named Bruce Eisner( High Times) and Owsley himself.

Interview with an Alchemist: Bear Owsley Interview

The actual interview was conducted by telephone. Bear now lives with his third wife on a homesteaded piece of land off the energy grid somewhere in Queensland, Australia. This is the first publication of the approved Owsley edit of the interview that was conducted on May 17, 1998.

They talk internet, government, childrens tv programming (they don't call it programming for nothing) What interested me was what he said about Timothy Leary, who is so often presented to society as the Grandfather of the Psychedelic movement, when he really was no such thing.
B: Bruce Eisner
O: Owsley

B: Getting back to the idea of people picking up these old imprints and being stuck with them. I was listening to a tape that Tim Leary did back in 1981 or ‘82 at Esalen, called “The Power of Imprinting.” This was back when he was on his twenty-four circuit model, before he got into virtual reality and computers and so forth.

O: Well, not really, he never really got into the computer movement. He was always on the periphery of it, but he was always at least a couple of years behind the curve.

B: Oh, I know.

O: You do know that?

B: I know very very well, because I was very close with him.

O: Why didn’t you tell him that, because I tried to . . .

B: Oh, I tried to push it. I was the only one who ever actually surfed him around the net, this was four months before he died. He had a Mac set-up with an ISDN, and I sat down and surfed him around, and then he ordered everybody in the house to go up and get his web site up to speed!

O: I’ll tell you a little story here, about Tim. I went down to see him one time in LA, I’d tried for years to just get him to open up to me and hang out, so that I could figure out who he was. He was always kind of a mystery.

B: I know what you mean.

O: Talking to him was very much like dealing with a mask of some sort. I showed up in town one day and called him up, and said, ”Let’s get together and go somewhere, let’s go have dinner, talk, hang out a bit.” “No, no I’m really busy, I’m doing this thing.” “Well, what are you doing?” “I’ve got these guys here and we’re designing a game. This game is going to be fantastic, incredible, everybody’s going to love this thing, it’s going to, . . . ” etc. So I go over to his place, I walk in, and he has a program up on the screen of his computer that looks sort of like one of those very early interactive games— everything’s text. And I said, “Tim, people don’t play these kind of games anymore. A couple of years ago, people were playing these kind of games, but everything now is graphics. It’s all graphics, it’s action, it’s incredible, it’s like driving a simulator. You’re not going to get people to play a text-based game anymore.” I could not get through to him. And he was just too busy to go and be a friend and hang out with somebody and talk about real things.

B: Well, that changed a lot after Barbara left him, then he became much more available.

O: Did he? Well, you know, then he fell into decline, and got into that endgame there. I got an email letter from a fellow who wanted me to contribute a tribute to a collection he was assembling. I said (to him): “Look, there’s got to be plenty of people who will write nice things about Tim Leary, I don’t think you want to hear what I have to say.” Well, it seems he did, and he kept after me. Each time I’d get a little more explicit, but he just kept coming back. I said, basically, what it boiled down to was that I didn’t think that Tim Leary was a hero. Not a hero to me, anyway. In fact, if I were going to be real precise about what I think, I think Tim Leary was probably the worst thing that ever happened to the psychedelic movement. He made everything difficult for all of us; he wouldn’t listen to any of us who tried to tell him to back off a bit. He was most probably primarily responsible for all the draconian laws we have today on the use of psychedelics and other mind-altering things. I said that as far as I was concerned, I never felt Tim Leary showed me who he was. He seemed to be always playing some role or game or something, or hiding behind some mask, and I just didn’t know who he was. So how can I tell you who he was? He never let me know who he was. Basically, I didn’t want to speak badly to the guy, because I always liked him. I always tried real hard to find some route so that I could actually have a heart-to-heart communication with him.

Timothy Leary, the worst thing that ever happened to the psychedelic movement, responsible for all the draconian laws we have today. Interesting?

Games US and Israel Play

I don't mean fun ones either.

First off, the US says we won't ask and you don't have to tell. The great unspoken, yet well known, Israel's own nuclear arsenal!

Then a little show, to put on a good face

Israeli police remove settlement outpost

How big was this settlement that Israel removed?
Seven huts, yup
" the outpost of seven huts"

and of course the fanatics will be back because "God gave them the land"
and they will be back, because this was done before.
They will be back because Israel wants them back there to encroach on land that is not theirs, because god doesn't give anyone anything!
But moves like this are always good PR purposes for Israel.

For Palestinians the settlements and the security infrastructure surrounding them are a major obstacle to their hopes of a viable state of their own.
that is the general idea.

Now onto Israel and Iran. Israel want's to attack Iran. That is clear. There are no nuclear weapons in Iran, that is clear also.
Nonetheless Israel wants to attack Iran.

'We reserve operational freedom on Iran'

Odd, that Israel keeps saying Iran threatens them, but they make no bones about shouting from the rooftops their desire to attack Iran, for no legitimate reason at all and no one says a word?

The Dove Family has left the building

Early monday morning, all seemed well in the dove household.
Sometime later however, a disturbance in the order of things, came to my attention.

The nest had fallen?
I hadn't noticed cats or starlings, so what went on? Why was the nest on the floor of the porch, the unhatched egg smashed?
By all appearances it would seem that the birds had done this themselves!
The female dove appeared to be cleaning house. She was flapping her wings and stirring up all kinds of dust. Or was this done to encourage the young one to get flying? Where was the baby? The male? We spotted them flying in the yard, the male keeping close to the young bird.
It now seems, the family has moved on. So I will share with you the last pics we were able to get of the Dove family.

The Male

The Female

The Young Dove.
You can see it's feet look to big for it's body, and it still has some of it's downy feathers. But, that baby could fly!
The male Dove staying close making cooing noises, and when the baby flew off the Dad followed.
The Dove parents really were doting parents, I will say that!
All in all an enjoyable experience, except for cleaning up the messy nest!

Big Brother Britian arrests woman for noisy sex

This is no joke. It is true and it is both ridiculous and frightening.
What other normal human behaviours can be criminalized?
Read on, you get the entire story at the link, I've excerpted a bit of it.

Disturbing the Peace- On the inalienable right to "excessively noisy sex"

At the end of April, Caroline Cartwright, a 48-year-old housewife from Wearside in the north east of England, was remanded in custody for having "excessively noisy sex." The cops took her in after neighbors complained of hearing her "shouting and groaning" and her "bed banging against the wall of her home." Cartwright has, quite reasonably, defended her inalienable right to be a howler: "I can't stop making noise during sex. It's unnatural to not make any noises and I don't think that I am particularly loud."

Pleasurable groaning and bed-banging are common noises in crowded towns and cities across the civilized world. Most of us deal with them by sticking a CD in the stereo. Those who complain are normally told to stop being prudish or to have a discreet chat with the creators of the offending sex sounds. So how did Cartwright's expressions of noisy joy become a police case, which later this month will be ruled on at Newcastle Crown Court, one of the biggest courts in the north of England?

Because, unbelievably, Cartwright had previously been served with an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO)—a civil order that is used to control the minutiae of British people's behaviour—that forbade her from making "excessive noise during sex" anywhere in England.
And these Anti-Social Behaviour Orders?!!! What in the hell was the thought behind these?

Conspiritus Ubiquitous- Evidence of Revision

This is part 1 of a 5 part documentary series known as Conspiritus Ubiquitous- Evidence of Revision. It is as stated, a 5 part documentary, each installment approximately 90 minutes long.

I have watched the first two parts so far, they cover the assasination of John Kennedy and the Vietnam war, including the bogus Gulf of Tonkin "incident".

The first two parts have been eye-openers to say the least. You can watch as history changes right before your eyes and what REALLY happened, becomes what didn't happen.

Somalia: Is the UN (western backed) government in trouble

Somali insurgents capture key town near Mogadishu

MOGADISHU: The Somali insurgent group al-Shabaab on Sunday took control of Jowhar, a key strategic town north of Mogadishu, after two hours of fierce fighting, witnesses and town elders said.

"There was fierce fighting at Jowhar's outskirts before al-Shabaab entered Jowhar," Mo'alim Muhidin, an elder in Jowhar, said. "After that, they took full control, including the administration's bases, like the police station."

"They were equipped with machine guns and battle wagons and are now patrolling the streets," he added.
Prior to taking Jowhar, al-Shabaab overcame the pro-government Islamic Courts Union (ICU) militia in Garasaley, 25 km south of Jowhar.

Jowhar, which is 90 km outside Mogadishu and is the hometown of President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, links Mogadishu and central Somalia.

Heavy fighting has engulfed north Mogadishu for the last 10 days as insurgents push to end the short reign of moderate Islamist Sheikh Sharif, who the militants say is too close to the West.

Sheikh Sharif, is the UN backed government leader.
I have my doubts he is any more moderate then any of the others, in fact, I would say the label of "moderate" is for the western audience.

Sheikh Sharif along with Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys were part of the former Islamic government that ruled Somalia, prior to overthrow in 2006 by the Ethiopian army at the behest of the US.
This Islamic government had brought a brief period of relative peace and stability to a this area, which is why they had to go.

That government is the one the west never hears about.
But in this interview it is mentioned:

INTERVIEW-U.N. envoy "destroying" Somalia - Aweys

Opposition leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys accused the U.N. special envoy to Somalia on Thursday of "destroying" the Horn of Africa nation, and dismissed talks with the interim government.

Aweys is seen as an influential figure among insurgents in Somalia where he has headed numerous Islamist groups since the 1990s including the Islamic Courts Union that controlled Mogadishu and much of the south in 2006 before being ousted by Ethiopian soldiers later that year.

The 62-year-old cleric told Reuters in an interview that U.N. envoy Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah was harming Somalis by only supporting the weak transitional government.

"It is a surprise to see Ould-Abdallah destroying Somalia when he, as a Muslim, has an obligation of being honest of what he has to do for Somalis," Aweys said.

"He consistently defends the government policies as if he is the president of this country, and he is not playing his role of engaging every side of the conflict."

Aweys along with President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed led the ICU, which briefly ushered in a time of stability in Somalia before being ousted in December 2006.
I wonder what Sheikh Sharif Ahmed hoped to gain by siding with the west?

The baby gets bigger....

Look at the difference in the baby dove in just 4 days!
Amazing! It is getting it's markings. You can click on it to look at it larger, it's feathers are so neat.
Also note the size of it, earlier pic to present, in relation to the unhatched egg.
It has really grown!

RFID drivers licence, Electronic Surveillance of the Human Goods!

The new RFID chipped Ontario, Canada drivers licence. All the tracking, none of the privacy.

For those foolish and blinded enough to believe this is for your 'security' and 'safety'
There is no security or safety in these RFID tagged drivers licence.

Look at how accessible RFID readers are, to anyone, for a few hundred dollars.
So anyone armed with a reader, can drive by, walk by, ride their bicycle past and scan the RFID tag in the drivers licence, and bingo, your information is in the hands of whoever!
It can happen at home, in the mall, at the park, where ever. It doesn't matter.

The concept, the very reason for the tag is to keep track of YOU.
Your movements, your whereabouts, your travels.
That is right, TRACKING YOU, like a bit of inventory, and nothing more.
Call it the tracking of humankind. The end of freedom of movement.

Fully stripped of our humanity, we are ready to be tracked like any other service or product. Like any other consumer good. Isn't that what we are? A good? Ever notice people are not referred to as people, always the consumer?

And, all that information, that can be gathered. Information about you! Which then could be used against you. Or sold to the highest bidder.

If you missed the report I posted yesterday, The Electronic Police State, read it.

If you want to know more on the RFID tags get this book Spychips,: How major governments and corporations plan to track your every move with RFID

Watch this brief video

Then stop deluding yourself that this is being done for your benefit.

Ontario's high-tech driver's licences pose privacy risk: watchdog

The technology behind Ontario's new enhanced driver's licences will allow people to secretly track other people's activities and movements unless privacy protection is added, warns the province's privacy commissioner.

"The radio frequency identity (RFID) tag that will be embedded into the card can be read not only by authorized readers, but just as easily by unauthorized readers," Ann Cavoukian said in a statement accompanying the release of her 2008 annual report Wednesday.

Police States, Fascism, Black Ops and Opium Production

Some interesting news stories you may, or may not have heard?

First off to Jolly Ol' England, which has to be the number 1 police state in the world, and not so jolly anymore. Well, not number 1 yet, but close, we'll get to that later.
This move gets them one step closer.

Government wants the military to run state schools

Yup, you read that right! Go ahead read some more, it only gets better.....

Alongside daily lessons, pupils would be expected to take part in activities such as drills, uniformed parades, weapons handling and adventure training.

What was that information on identifying fascism? Widespread militarism, despite other needs of the societies? Oh yes, 14 characteristics of Fascism.

Speaking of the burgeoning police state, no wait a minute, the now present police state in alleged "free nations". A report was done ranking the UK and the US numbers 5 and 6 respectively in the Police State Survey. Imagine that, the bringers of 'fweedum and demonocracy' to all, are obvious police states.

The report, read it !> The Electronic Police State,<>

“In an Electronic Police State, every surveillance camera recording, every email you send, every Internet site you surf, every post you make, every check you write, every credit card swipe, every cell phone ping … are all criminal evidence, and they are held in searchable databases, for a long, long time,” says the report.

“Whoever holds this evidence can make you look very, very bad whenever they care enough to do so. You can be prosecuted whenever they feel like it – the evidence is already in their database.”

To help out with all the moves towards the police state, particularly in the US, this bit of news is oh so interesting-

Pentagon’s Black Budget Grows to More Than $50 Billion

The Pentagon wants to spend just over $50 billion on classified programs next year, newly-released Defense Department budget documents reveal. “That’s the largest-ever sum,” according to Aviation Week’s Bill Sweetman, a longtime black-budget seer — a three percent increase over last year’s total.

It makes the Pentagon’s secret operations, including the intelligence budgets nested inside, “roughly equal in magnitude to the entire defense budgets of the UK, France or Japan,” Sweetman adds. All in all, about seven and a half percent of the Defense Department’s total spending is now classified.

Then this bit of news, also interesting, makes me think about military ops funded in unique and different ways they don't even show up in the budget. Where does money come from for covert activities?

One place money for covert activites could easily be sourced from, Afghanistan, fully occupied and yet....... the drug cash crop just gets bigger and bigger. Who benefits?

40-fold drug surge in Afghanistan: report

How is that possible? A 40 times, that is a 40 x increase in opium production while Afghanistan remains occupied by US and NATO troops???

Iranian police officials say drug production in Afghanistan has had a 40-fold increase since the US led invasion of the country in 2001.

Afghanistan's opium poppy crop is set to break all records this year, as grim reports by Iranian sources showed that drug production has reached a new height in the land-locked country.

That can't be a coincidence, I mean that just isn't possible?

The latest addition to our household

We have a new baby at our house! Isn't it exciting?! Ok, well it is for me it is.

How can anyone not love a baby? Of any kind.

Out of nowhere, or so it seemed, a nest was built in the backporch and came fully occupied-
with a pair of mourning doves. How had I missed the entire process of the nest being built?
I don't know.
Maybe, Mr and Mrs M. Dove, worked quickly, diligently and very stealthily?
Or maybe I was simply not paying attention to all the spring activity?

That is them in the pic. Us looking at them. Them looking at us.

One of the birds sat, alot of the time. Sometimes the mate flew in and there was cooing and such. I honestly can't tell which is male and which is female, but it doesn't matter really, they were together and obviously in a parental way.

While the birds seemed to have settled quite nicely into their new surroundings, suddenly danger was lurking everywhere. Ferocious neighbourhood cats began to appear!

Having birds nest in your porch, makes one aware of just how many cat's are in the neighbourhood. I had to chase them away to keep my little doves safe. And I did! Though I had difficulty with one very persistent cat. Who I caught climbing the wood posts to get up to the nest. Eventually this one got the hint, after chasing, much banging and noise making and it stayed away.

The doves were pretty tolerant of us, maybe they appreciated the safe haven we had provided. Peering into the nest we noted there were two eggs.
We have been patiently waiting and waiting for the babies to hatch.
Well yesterday, we noticed nesting bird was sitting off to the side of the nest.
Aha, there must be a baby bird!
Sadly one egg did not hatch, but happily the other did. The first baby pictures!
One brand new baby mourning dove!
Cute huh?

Escape from the Zombie Food Court- Joe Bageant

I want to thank Nina from DEEP INTO ARTLIFE WEST for pointing me to this most interesting read.
Thanks Nina! :)
I found it to be food for thought and wanted to share some of it. Please, read the rest at the link:
Escape from the Zombie Food Court

As psych students, most of you understand that there is no way you can escape being conditioned by your society, one way or another. You are as conditioned as any trained chicken in a carnival. So am I. When we go to the ATM machine and punch the buttons to make cash fall out, we are doing the same thing as the chickens that peck the colored buttons make corn drop from the feeder. You will not do a single thing today, tomorrow or the next day that you have not been generally indoctrinated and deeply conditioned to do -- mostly along class lines.

For instance, as university students, you are among the 20% or so of Americans indoctrinated and conditioned to be the administrating and operating class of the American Empire in some form or another. In the business of managing the other 75% in innumerable ways. Psychologists, teachers, lawyers, social workers, doctors, accountants, sociologists, mental health workers, clergy -- all are in the business of coordinating and managing the greater mass of working class citizenry by the Empire's approved methods, and toward the same end: Maximum profitability for a corporate based state.

Yet it all seems so normal. Certainly the psychologists who have prescribed so much Prozac that it now shows up in the piss of penguins, saw what they did as necessary. And the doctors who enable the profitable blackmail practiced by the medical industries see it all as part of the most technologically advanced medical system in the world. And the teacher, who sees no problem with 20% of her fourth graders being on Ritalin, in the name of "appropriate behavior," is happy to have control of her classroom. None of these feel like dupes or pawns of a corporate state. It seems like just the way things are. Just modern American reality. Which is a corporate generated reality.

Given the financialization of all aspects of our culture and lives, even our so-called leisure time, it is not an exaggeration to say that true democracy is dead and a corporate financial state has now arrived. If you can get your head around that, it's not hard to see an ever merging global corporate system masquerading electronically and digitally as a nation called the United States. Or Japan for that matter. The corporation now animates us from within our very selves through management of the need hierarchy in goods and information.

As students, even in such an enlightened institution as this one, you are being subjected to the at least some of pedagogy of the corporate management of society for maximum profit. Unarguably your training will help many fellow human beings. But in the larger scheme of things, you are part of an institution, the American Psycho-socio-medical complex, and thus authorized to manage public consciousness, one person at a time. Remember that the entire pedagogy in which you are immersed is itself immersed in a corporate financial state. Even if some of what you do is alternative psychology, that is a reaction to the state, and therefore a result of it. It's still part of the financialization of consciousness. And, I might add that none you expect to work for nothing.

This financialization of our consciousness under American style capitalism has become all we know. That's why we fear its loss. Hence the bailouts of the thousands of "zombie banks," dead but still walking, thanks to the people's taxpayer offerings to the money god so that banks will not die. We believe that we dare not let corporations die. Corporations feed us. They entertain us. Corporations occupy one full half of our waking hours of our lives, through employment, either directly or indirectly. They heal us when we are sick. So it's easy to see why the corporations feel like a friendly benevolent entity in the larger American consciousness. Corporations are, of course, deathless and faceless machines, and have no soul or human emotions. That we look to them for so much makes us a corporate cult, and makes corporations a fetish of our culture. Yet to us, they are like the weather just there.

NATO in Yugoslavia, why?

Since we are on the subject of Yugoslavia?
I had this article book-marked for some time now.
Interesting piece really, considering it was written 13 years ago.

It is amazing how some people can read the signs, and others are doomed to blindness.

Why is NATO in Yugoslavia?: By Prof. Sean Gervasi
excerpts, of a very long article.

"However, the sending of NATO troops into the Balkans is the result of enormous pressure for the general extension of NATO eastwards.

If the Yugoslav enterprise is the first concrete step in the expansion of NATO, others are planned for the near future. Some Western powers want to bring the Visegrad countries into NATO as full members by the end of the century. There was resistance to the pressures for such extension among certain Western countries for some time. However, the recalcitrants have now been bludgeoned into accepting the alleged necessity of extending NATO.

The question is: why are the Western powers pressing for the expansion of NATO? Why is NATO being renewed and extended when the "Soviet threat" has disappeared? There is clearly much more to it than we have so far been told.

There are deeper reasons for the dispatch of NATO forces to the Balkans, and especially for the extension of NATO to Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary in the relatively near future. These have to do with an emerging strategy for securing the resources of the Caspian Sea region and for "stabilizing" the countries of Eastern Europe -- ultimately for "stabilizing" Russia and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This is, to put it mildly, an extremely ambitious and potentially self- contradictory policy. And it is important to pose some basic questions about the reasons being given for pursuing it.

The idea of "stabilizing" the countries which formerly constituted the socialist bloc in Europe does not simply mean ensuring political stability there, ensuring that the regimes which replaced Socialism remain in place. It also means ensuring that economic and social conditions remain unchanged. And, since the so-called transition to democracy in the countries affected has in fact led to an incipient deindustrialization and a collapse of living standards for the majority, the question arises whether it is really desirable.

(therefore impoverishment of the population, through the "transition to democracy" is definitely one goal of NATO's expansion)

The question is all the more pertinent since "stabilization", in the sense in which it is used in the West, means reproducing in the former Socialist bloc countries economic and social conditions which are similar to the economic and social conditions currently prevailing in the West. The economies of the Western industrial nations are, in fact, in a state of semi-collapse, although the governments of those countries would never really acknowledge the fact. Nonetheless, any reasonably objective assessment of the economic situation in the West leads to this conclusion. And that conclusion is supported by official statistics and most analyses coming from mainstream economists.

(in 1996 the author recognized that western industrial nation were already in collapse. Which beqs the question, what is stabilization and democratisation really about?)

It is also clear, as well, that the attempt to "stabilize" the former Socialist bloc countries is creating considerable tension with Russia, and potentially with other countries. Not a few commentators have made the point that Western actions in extending NATO even raise the risks of nuclear conflict

(that is worth the bold and red print, that should cause many many person to pause for thought, sadly it won't.)

It is enough to raise these questions briefly to see that the extension of NATO which has, de facto, begun in Yugoslavia and is being proposed for other countries is to a large extent based on confused and even irrational reasoning. One is tempted to say that it results from the fear and willfulness of certain ruling groups. To put it most bluntly, why should the world see any benefit in the enforced extension to other countries of the economic and social chaos which prevails in the West, and why should it see any benefit in that when the very process itself increases the risks of nuclear war?

The purposes of this paper are to describe what lies behind the current efforts to extend NATO and to raise some basic questions about whether this makes any sense, in both the narrow and deeper meanings of the term.

That is the introduction, the paper starts and contains a number of subheadings:

The Struggle for Mastery in the Balkans

"But why? Why should the media seek to deceive the Western public? It was not simply that blatant and large-scale intervention in Yugoslav affairs had to be hidden from public view. It was also that people would ask questions about why Germany and the US deliberately created havoc in the Balkans. They wanted inevitably to know the reasons for such actions. And these had to be hidden even more carefully than the destructive actions of great powers.."

In this section we see a name that is back now in the Obama Administration,
Richard Holbrooke.
13 years ago, he is quote saying:

"This time, the United States must lead in the creation of a security architecture that includes and thereby stabilizes all of Europe -- the West, the former Soviet satellites of Central Europe and, most critically. Russia and the former republics of the Soviet Union"

A man who has always been part of a much larger agenda, back in power with the peacemaker Obama?

Further subheadings included in this article, each part excellent.

The New "Great Game" in the Caspian Sea
The Next Stage: "Stabilizing" the East
The Dangers of Extending NATO

The Weakness of the Western Position

Why We Fight: U.S. Troops Die For Rapists

Lets not forget the Canadian Troops are there fighting for the "cause" too!

Ted Rall -American soldiers serving in Vietnam wondered what they were fighting for. U.S. troops in Afghanistan don't have that problem. They know exactly what they're fighting for: rapists.

After President Obama's coming "Afghan surge" there will be 72,000 soldiers in Afghanistan. Their primary mission is to prevent Afghans from overthrowing the unpopular regime of Hamid Karzai, the former oil consultant installed by George W. Bush when the U.S. occupation began nearly eight years ago. ( so the US troops are keeping Afghanistan free of the Afghans?)

Reminds me of this song's "Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation"refrain-

Lyndon Johnson told the nation have no fear of escalation / I am trying everyone to please / Though it isn't really war, I'm sending 50,000 more / to help save Vietnam from the Vietnamese

America's media repeatedly claimed that Afghan women would be better off under the U.S.-supported Northern Alliance puppet government headed by Karzai than under the Taliban. But when I went to Afghanistan and asked women what they thought, they had a different story. The defeat of the Taliban brought about the collapse of law and order, making life even more dangerous, especially for women. "Under the Taliban," a woman told me, "I watched rapists being executed. Now I see them in the government."

The Afghan women's rights group RAWA has repeatedly told anyone willing to listen that there hasn't been much improvement for women and girls since the U.S. occupation began in 2001. But no one--least of all left-of-center Americans eager to embrace the Afghan war--has wanted to hear what they had to say.

Liberal Democrats who cling to Afghanistan as "the good war" (?) the U.S. should be fighting are being forced to confront the ugly truth about their ally. Karzai has signed a law that states that "women cannot leave the house without their husbands' permission, that they can only seek work, education or visit the doctor with their husbands' permission, and that they cannot refuse their husband sex,"

The Shiite Personal Status act applies only to devotees of the Shia branch of Islam, which account for between 10 and 20 percent of the population. How can a secular democratic state have different laws depending on a citizen's faith? The answer is: It can't. Afghanistan isn't secular or democratic. The "new" Afghanistan's constitution is based on Sharia law--exactly as it was under the Taliban. But the U.S. media has purposefully failed to report the icky truth about our ally. (no surprise there!)

The new law requires women to have sex with their husbands at least once every four days unless they are sick or menstruating. "Obedience, readiness for intercourse and not leaving the house without the permission of the husband are the duties of the wife," reads the law of a nation ostensibly invaded by U.S. troops in part to liberate Afghan women. "As long as the husband is not traveling, he has the right to have sexual intercourse with his wife every fourth night," it says.

Afghan Senator Humaira Namati calls the rape bill "worse than during the Taliban" and said it was rammed through parliament without debate. "Anyone who spoke out was accused of being against Islam," she said. Several hundred women protesting the law on the streets of Kabul were viciously assaulted by men as police stood back and watched.

In fairness to the responsible male legislators, they did add a provision to protect Shiite women from "dead bed": Afghan men have to put out "at least once every four months."

Well that is quite the provision!

Karzai signed legalized rape into law in order to appease right-wing legislators in an election year. After international criticism, however, he began backpedaling with the lamest of all possible reasons: he didn't read the bill before he was for it.

"I was not aware of what I had signed,"

Yeah sure!

As Karzai BSes for the cameras, hundreds of Afghan women languish in prisons around the country. Their crime? They're teen brides, some as young as 10, who ran away from much older husbands who purchased them. "In President Hamid Karzai's Afghanistan, women are still imprisoned for running away from home," reports The Sunday Herald.

Nice theocracy you got there, Mullah Karzai.Bold

Remember this column the next time you watch a flag-draped coffin returning from Afghanistan. The young man inside that box didn't die for nothing. He died to protect rapists.

Doesn't it make you proud? Support the troops! Never questioning what it is that Americans and Canadians are really supporting.

Buying Brand Obama

This is a really good piece by Chris Hedges. It just lays it all out. Brand Obama, I like it!
I am posting the entire article.

Barack Obama is a brand. And the Obama brand is designed to make us feel good about our government while corporate overlords loot the Treasury, our elected officials continue to have their palms greased by armies of corporate lobbyists, our corporate media diverts us with gossip and trivia and our imperial wars expand in the Middle East. Brand Obama is about being happy consumers. We are entertained. We feel hopeful. We like our president. We believe he is like us. But like all branded products spun out from the manipulative world of corporate advertising, we are being duped into doing and supporting a lot of things that are not in our interest.

What, for all our faith and hope, has the Obama brand given us? His administration has spent, lent or guaranteed $12.8 trillion in taxpayer dollars to Wall Street and insolvent banks in a doomed effort to reinflate the bubble economy, a tactic that at best forestalls catastrophe and will leave us broke in a time of profound crisis. Brand Obama has allocated nearly $1 trillion in defense-related spending and the continuation of our doomed imperial projects in Iraq, where military planners now estimate that 70,000 troops will remain for the next 15 to 20 years. Brand Obama has expanded the war in Afghanistan, including the use of drones sent on cross-border bombing runs into Pakistan that have doubled the number of civilians killed over the past three months. Brand Obama has refused to ease restrictions so workers can organize and will not consider single-payer, not-for-profit health care for all Americans. And Brand Obama will not prosecute the Bush administration for war crimes, including the use of torture, and has refused to dismantle Bush's secrecy laws or restore habeas corpus.

Brand Obama offers us an image that appears radically individualistic and new. It inoculates us from seeing that the old engines of corporate power and the vast military-industrial complex continue to plunder the country. Corporations, which control our politics, no longer produce products that are essentially different, but brands that are different. Brand Obama does not threaten the core of the corporate state any more than did Brand George W. Bush. The Bush brand collapsed. We became immune to its studied folksiness. We saw through its artifice. This is a common deflation in the world of advertising. So we have been given a new Obama brand with an exciting and faintly erotic appeal. Benetton and Calvin Klein were the precursors to the Obama brand, using ads to associate themselves with risqué art and progressive politics. It gave their products an edge. But the goal, as with all brands, was to make passive consumers mistake a brand with an experience.

"The abandonment of the radical economic foundations of the women's and civil-rights movements by the conflation of causes that came to be called political correctness successfully trained a generation of activists in the politics of image, not action," Naomi Klein wrote in "No Logo."

Obama, who has become a global celebrity, was molded easily into a brand. He had almost no experience, other than two years in the Senate, lacked any moral core and could be painted as all things to all people. His brief Senate voting record was a miserable surrender to corporate interests. He was happy to promote nuclear power as "green" energy. He voted to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He reauthorized the Patriot Act. He would not back a bill designed to cap predatory credit card interest rates. He opposed a bill that would have reformed the notorious Mining Law of 1872. He refused to support the single-payer health care bill HR676, sponsored by Reps. Dennis Kucinich and John Conyers. He supported the death penalty. And he backed a class-action "reform" bill that was part of a large lobbying effort by financial firms. The law, known as the Class Action Fairness Act, would effectively shut down state courts as a venue to hear most class-action lawsuits and deny redress in many of the courts where these cases have a chance of defying powerful corporate challenges.

While Gaza was being bombarded and hit with airstrikes in the weeks before Obama took office, "the Obama team let it be known that it would not object to the planned resupply of ‘smart bombs' and other hi-tech ordnance that was already flowing to Israel," according to Seymour Hersh. Even his one vaunted anti-war speech as a state senator, perhaps his single real act of defiance, was swiftly reversed. He told the Chicago Tribune on July 27, 2004, that "there's not that much difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage. The difference, in my mind, is who's in a position to execute." And unlike anti-war stalwarts like Kucinich, who gave hundreds of speeches against the war, Obama then dutifully stood silent until the Iraq war became unpopular.

Obama's campaign won the vote of hundreds of marketers, agency heads and marketing-services vendors gathered at the Association of National Advertisers' annual conference in October. The Obama campaign was named Advertising Age's marketer of the year for 2008 and edged out runners-up Apple and Zappos.com. Take it from the professionals. Brand Obama is a marketer's dream. President Obama does one thing and Brand Obama gets you to believe another. This is the essence of successful advertising. You buy or do what the advertiser wants because of how they can make you feel.

Celebrity culture has leeched into every aspect of our culture, including politics, to bequeath to us what Benjamin DeMott called "junk politics." Junk politics does not demand justice or the reparation of rights. Junk politics personalizes and moralizes issues rather than clarifying them. "It's impatient with articulated conflict, enthusiastic about America's optimism and moral character, and heavily dependent on feel-your-pain language and gesture," DeMott noted. The result of junk politics is that nothing changes - "meaning zero interruption in the processes and practices that strengthen existing, interlocking systems of socioeconomic advantage." It redefines traditional values, tilting "courage toward braggadocio, sympathy toward mawkishness, humility toward self-disrespect, identification with ordinary citizens toward distrust of brains." Junk politics "miniaturizes large, complex problems at home while maximizing threats from abroad. It's also given to abrupt unexplained reversals of its own public stances, often spectacularly bloating problems previously miniaturized." And finally, it "seeks at every turn to obliterate voters' consciousness of socioeconomic and other differences in their midst."

An image-based culture, one dominated by junk politics, communicates through narratives, pictures and carefully orchestrated spectacle and manufactured pseudo-drama. Scandalous affairs, hurricanes, earthquakes, untimely deaths, lethal new viruses, train wrecks-these events play well on computer screens and television. International diplomacy, labor union negotiations and convoluted bailout packages do not yield exciting personal narratives or stimulating images. A governor who patronizes call girls becomes a huge news story. A politician who proposes serious regulatory reform, universal health care or advocates curbing wasteful spending is boring. Kings, queens and emperors once used their court conspiracies to divert their subjects. Today cinematic, political and journalistic celebrities distract us with their personal foibles and scandals. They create our public mythology. Acting, politics and sports have become, as they were during the reign of Nero, interchangeable.

In an age of images and entertainment, in an age of instant emotional gratification, we do not seek reality. Reality is complicated. Reality is boring. We are incapable or unwilling to handle its confusion. We ask to be indulged and comforted by clichés, stereotypes and inspirational messages that tell us we can be whoever we seek to be, that we live in the greatest country on Earth, that we are endowed with superior moral and physical qualities, and that our future will always be glorious and prosperous, either because of our own attributes, or our national character, or because we are blessed by God. Reality is not accepted as an impediment to our desires. Reality does not make us feel good.

In his book "Public Opinion," Walter Lippmann distinguished between "the world outside and the pictures in our heads." He defined a "stereotype" as an oversimplified pattern that helps us find meaning in the world. Lippmann cited examples of the crude "stereotypes we carry about in our heads" of whole groups of people such as "Germans," "South Europeans," "Negroes," "Harvard men," "agitators" and others. These stereotypes, Lippmann noted, give a reassuring and false consistency to the chaos of existence. They offer easily grasped explanations of reality and are closer to propaganda because they simplify rather than complicate.

Pseudo-events-dramatic productions orchestrated by publicists, political machines, television, Hollywood or advertisers-however, are very different. They have, as Daniel Boorstin wrote in "The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America," the capacity to appear real even though we know they are staged. They are capable, because they can evoke a powerful emotional response, of overwhelming reality and replacing reality with a fictional narrative that often becomes accepted truth. The unmasking of a stereotype damages and often destroys its credibility. But pseudo-events, whether they show the president in an auto plant or a soup kitchen or addressing troops in Iraq, are immune to this deflation. The exposure of the elaborate mechanisms behind the pseudo-event only adds to its fascination and its power. This is the basis of the convoluted television reporting on how effectively political campaigns and politicians have been stage-managed. Reporters, especially those on television, no longer ask if the message is true but if the pseudo-event worked or did not work as political theater. Pseudo-events are judged on how effectively we have been manipulated by illusion. Those events that appear real are relished and lauded. Those that fail to create a believable illusion are deemed failures. Truth is irrelevant. Those who succeed in politics, as in most of the culture, are those who create the brands and pseudo-events that offer the most convincing fantasies. And this is the art Obama has mastered.

A public that can no longer distinguish between truth and fiction is left to interpret reality through illusion. Random facts or obscure bits of data and trivia are used to bolster illusion and give it credibility or are discarded if they interfere with the message. The worse reality becomes-the more, for example, foreclosures and unemployment skyrocket-the more people seek refuge and comfort in illusions. When opinions cannot be distinguished from facts, when there is no universal standard to determine truth in law, in science, in scholarship, or in reporting the events of the day, when the most valued skill is the ability to entertain, the world becomes a place where lies become true, where people can believe what they want to believe. This is the real danger of pseudo-events and why pseudo-events are far more pernicious than stereotypes. They do not explain reality, as stereotypes attempt to, but replace reality. Pseudo-events redefine reality by the parameters set by their creators. These creators, who make massive profits peddling these illusions, have a vested interest in maintaining the power structures they control.

The old production-oriented culture demanded what the historian Warren Susman termed character. The new consumption-oriented culture demands what he called personality. The shift in values is a shift from a fixed morality to the artifice of presentation. The old cultural values of thrift and moderation honored hard work, integrity and courage. The consumption-oriented culture honors charm, fascination and likability. "The social role demanded of all in the new culture of personality was that of a performer," Susman wrote. "Every American was to become a performing self."

The junk politics practiced by Obama is a consumer fraud. It is about performance. It is about lies. It is about keeping us in a perpetual state of childishness. But the longer we live in illusion, the worse reality will be when it finally shatters our fantasies. Those who do not understand what is happening around them and who are overwhelmed by a brutal reality they did not expect or foresee search desperately for saviors. They beg demagogues to come to their rescue. This is the ultimate danger of the Obama Brand. It effectively masks the wanton internal destruction and theft being carried out by our corporate state. These corporations, once they have stolen trillions in taxpayer wealth, will leave tens of millions of Americans bereft, bewildered and yearning for even more potent and deadly illusions, ones that could swiftly snuff out what is left of our diminished open society.

Games Wargamers Play ?

A few updates on some news I have been following:

NATO is holding "war games" in Georgia.

Another oxymoron, war games. Is war a game to the people who are caught in the midst of it? What kind of sick mind thinks this stuff up? Obviously these kind of words are the products of PR firms, spin doctors, whatever you wanna call them. Call them word games!
They create nice sounding labels for nasty, nasty things, so they can play the populace as the fool.

Anyway, I digress, NATO is conducting anti-terrorist tactics, or so they say.

But Operations Cooperative Lancer/Cooperative Longbow, sound like they could be preperations or covers for other actions including attacks on Russia?

The first stage, running from Wednesday to May 19, is a command post exercise focusing on training and compatibility with NATO procedures in a crisis response operation.

The second stage, to be held from May 21 to June 3, is a field drill aimed at providing basic training for peacekeepers.

Russia is aware of this potential, obviously. Russia is unimpressed with this show at their door.

Yesterday it was alleged that there had been an attempted coup in Georgia. Georgia accused Russian of being behind the coup, but it seems even the Pentagon calls the Georgian mutiny an "isolated incident"

"It looks like it was a somewhat isolated incident that has now come to an end," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman, adding that he had no information about Russian involvement.

There is news that this was orchestrated by Georgia. Was it an attempt to garner sympathy in the west? Was it a war game?

A practice run in case the opposition parties and supporters get too powerful?
The mutiny of about 500 troops at a base outside Tbilisi ended without violence after the president visited the base and urged the rebels to surrender their arms.

If this had been a real coup attempt would the President have really gone to have a talk with alleged rebels and have them surrender their arms??

It has that kind of feel good movie ending, no?

Also in the news Russia expelled two NATO envoys, who both just happened to be Canadians.

Which I am sure will send Peter MacKay into full blown propaganda spin mode for the Canadian audience. Right now, he just want to know why?

(We'll give him time to fabricate something along the lines of this pirate tales, perhaps)

Though most news outlets are reporting this was done as a result of the expulsion of two Russians from Brussels, for spying.

I guess it is entirely possible the Canadians were spying also. Therfore they too, had to be expelled.

The beat goes on, the beat goes on......

Paul Volcker and a higher rate of "natural unemployment"

The "natural rate of unemployment". Nice label. So vague. What does it really mean?

What that really means is that at any given time a set or certain percentage of the population will remain unemployed or to borrow these words-

Definition:
The natural rate of unemployment is the healthy unemployment rate that will always occur in an economy, unless it is severely overheated.

Is there such a thing as a healthy unemployment rate? Who is it healthy for? Certainly not the unemployed! So who would benefit from a natural rate of unemployment?
Who will be harmed by an even higher permanent rate of "natural unemployment" ?

‘Great Recession’ Will Redefine Full Employment as Jobs Vanish

Post-recession America may be saddled with high unemployment even after good times finally return. (would continuing high unemployment really signal the return of 'good times') Hundreds of thousands of jobs have vanished forever in industries such as auto manufacturing and financial services. Millions of people who were fired or laid off will find it harder to get hired again and for years may have to accept lower earnings than they enjoyed before the slump.

This restructuring -- in what former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker calls “the Great Recession” -- is causing some economists to reconsider what might be the “natural” rate of unemployment: a level that neither accelerates nor decelerates inflation.

This state of equilibrium is often described as “full” employment. Fallout from the recession implies a “markedly higher” natural rate of unemployment, says Edmund Phelps a professor at Columbia University in New York and winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in economics. “It was 5.5 percent; maybe it will be 6.5 percent, maybe 7 percent.”

who knows maybe it will be even higher?

Tank Batallion Mutiny in Georgia

Attempted coup in Georgia!

Georgia sends tanks to quell army rebellion

Georgian officials have sent tanks and armoured personnel carriers to a military base near Tbilisi where soldiers have apparently mounted a mutiny.

The authorities are describing the situation at the Mukhrovani base as a coup attempt and an effort to disrupt NATO exercises due to get underway in Georgia tomorrow.

With fingers pointing one way and the other....

Georgia accuses Russian of being behind plot

Russia denies involvement

Was Russian involved?

While it is possible one can't be sure, since Saakashvili is very unpopular in Georgia.

Just last month tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protests against the Saakashvalli government. On April 9th/09

Georgians rally against president

and for 3 days the people were out in the streets..

More Protests in Georgian Capital

Roads in front of key buildings were blocked by groups of demonstrators who had camped out overnight.

They accuse President Mikhail Saakashvili of leading the country into a disastrous war with Russia, and want him to step down.

Canada's role in the Somali Pirate Drama

Just what is Canada's role in the ongoing saga of the Somali Pirates??

Oh sure, the pirates are actual people, possibly Somalians, but maybe Ethiopians, who really knows? But Canada's "dramatic" chases, and it's "catch and release" policies? What is this really all about?

Canadian ships, specifically the HMS Windsor, according to Peter Mckay, have been involved in deterring pirate attacks. Here
"We have at least three, if not more, attempts that have been made on ships where the HMCS Winnipeg has intervened and prevented those attacks."

Well how may interventions is it Mr MacKay? One would think he would be in a position to know the exact numbers?

Mr MacKay then goes on to say, and I quote-
"MacKay said because Canadians are in a "flux zone" outside territorial limits, sailors can't arrest and charge suspects unless they are directly attacking a Canadian-flagged ship."

This "truth" as presented by Mr MacKay, contradicts this man's opinion and apparently Canadian law and International Law.

Michael Byers, an international law expert at the University of British Columbia. He said piracy is in Canada's Criminal Code and subject to universal jurisdiction under international law.

"I think the government has decided it doesn't want to make the time and effort to prosecute what are essentially a bunch of teenage Somalis, and have made this decision knowing full well that prosecution will not actually solve the larger problem."

Besides Michael Byers, we can read the comments of William Tetley. A professor of maritime law at McGill University, a former president of the Canadian Maritime Law Association and author of numerous textbooks on maritime law. He is regarded as one of Canada's foremost experts in the field. What has Mr Tetley to say on this matter?

William Tetley has dismissed government claims of lack of jurisdiction as “quite wrong,” Adding the Canadians have been “caught with their pants down; they don't have any guts and neither does the Prime Minister.”

Canada is also a signatory to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which makes piracy an international crime, formalizing maritime law that dates back centuries.

Canada is also a signatory to the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, which calls for the prosecution of anyone who “seizes or exercises control over ships by force or threat of force or any other form of intimidation.”

So we have two specialists in the field of international and maritime law who say Canada has all the laws it needs to arrest the pirates and prosecute them.

Why then the bogus claims made by the government of the day? A government who claims it can do nothing but confiscate guns and release pirates.

Who then go on to pirate another day.

Maybe that is exactly what this is all about. The Pirate problem continuing on, and Canada playing the role of good cop abiding by as they allege international law.

Having the pirate "problem" allows a military build-up in that area of the world to continue.

While the dramatic western media reports help build up public opinion against the pirates, as a problem solveable by only one already favoured means, land invasion of Somalia by the West.
