Iran: Communication Jamming Led to Missile Fire

Today, Iran is acknowledging they unintentionally shot down the plane.
I'm glad they are taking responsibility for this error.  It's the right thing to do.
Obviously, there are many unanswered questions. A few I'm asking..
Why was this plane in flight considering all that had occurred?
Why did the plane turn around, as has been reported?
Why deviate from planned course?
And who was jamming communications?
Because communications being jammed is very possible, very likely,  given the circumstances

The Iranian missile operator who shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet opened fire independently because of communications "jamming", a Revolutionary Guards commander said on Saturday.
The operator had mistaken the Boeing 737 for a "cruise missile" and only had ten seconds to decide whether or not to open fire, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the Guards' aerospace commander, said in televised remarks.

The plane was shot down on Wednesday, hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on two military bases housing US troops in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in an American airstrike in Baghdad.

Hajizadeh, the head of the guard's aerospace division, said his unit accepts “full responsibility” for the shootdown. In an address broadcast by state TV, he said that when he learned about the downing of the plane, “I wished I was dead.”

He said guard forces ringing the capital had beefed up their air defences and were at the “highest level of readiness", fearing that the US would retaliate. He said an officer made the “bad decision” to open fire on the plane after mistaking it for a cruise missile.

"He had 10 seconds to decide. He could have decided to strike or not to strike and under such circumstances he took the wrong decision."

"It was a short-range missile that exploded next to the plane," he added.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed his “deep sympathy” to the families of the victims and called on the armed forces to "pursue probable shortcomings and guilt in the painful incident.”

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy issued a statement saying the crash investigation should continue and the “perpetrators” should be brought to justice. He said Iran should compensate victims' families, and he requested “official apologies through diplomatic channels.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with the country mourning the loss of many of its nationals, said closure and accountability were needed after Iran's announcement.

The plane, en route to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, was carrying 167 passengers and nine crew members from several countries, including 82 Iranians, 57 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians, according to officials.

  1. You asked extremely good questions, Penny. I included them in my post this morning.

Iran is being painted as initially trying to hide the truth, but surely other states know there is a process of gathering facts before stating conclusions, and Iran seems to have done that rather quickly.

    1. Hey yaya:

The spin right out the door was Iran was hiding something etc., but you are correct- there is a process of gathering facts and Iran looks to have done that pretty quickly and accepted responsibility--- still there is more to this.

      And it isn't over

  2. I guess it wasn't " Murphy's law." after all. I knew it was suspicious, timing is everything.

    1. Hi Mieszko I- Yah timing is everything but sometimes it's nothing....(correlation does not equal causation) the information about Iran's "shooting this down" was just not there. Other then the timing. There was little to go on.

It's good Iran is taking responsibility

  3. This might also explain why Zelensky was so " reasonable and calm " during the whole episode, telling everyone not to jump to conclusions. He might have know what the conclusion was the whole time.

    1. I hadn't noticed Zelensky's reaction.. so he was calm was he? Yah, he might have known- it's entirely possible

  4. Hi Penny,
Jamming was done by the US Army (Military Intel) but now by USAF. When they (or israel) jam communications they insert false information...'jamming' is key here. This story ain't over. The only thing that baffles me is why the Ukrainian plane wasn't grounded. And I can't get the 2018 accidental shoot down of Russian plane by Syria caused by israeli shadowing. (Where were the reparations then?) I smell a kosher/assholian RAT!

    1. Hey wallflower: I'm wondering if jamming was the reason there were no communications from the plane after take off?

Or if the plane turning around was due to navigation being interfered with due to jamming. Perhaps the pilot thought about heading back to the airport

But, still one has to wonder why the airplane was in the air?

  5. Trump is certainly doing all he can to inflame protestors in Iran-

"To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I've stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage."

"The government of Iran must allow human rights groups to monitor and report facts from the ground on the ongoing protests by the Iranian people," Trump wrote. "There can not be another massacre of peaceful protesters, nor an internet shutdown. The world is watching."

We are all surely aware that Usrael has assets on the ground in Iran- from MEK through to militant PKK assets- that the Usrael led imperialists have been training for decades..

  6. a generalized article on GPS jamming being done globally
    it's clearly a problem

"The vast majority of incidents involve GPS-based navigation systems either experiencing a total loss of signal or — more alarmingly — misreporting the aircraft’s position. In around 50 cases, no immediate explanation is given for the malfunction, says Guy Buesnel, PNT security technologist at Spirient Communications, a communications networks provider based in the U.K.

Buesnel says many of the reports he has reviewed involve military jamming, but other incidents are either deliberate or unexplained.

Buesnel highlighted several other recent incidents that have occurred outside of the U.S., such as a report from Flight Service Bureau Bulletin for an October 2016 warning of serious GPS interference at France’s Marseille-Provence airport.

“GPS-based procedures for 31R/31L and 13R/13L are unusable for now,” the report notes. “Previously, we’ve talked about RPLL/Manila, HECA/Cairo, part of the Turkish FIR, and North Korea having the same issues.”

The FSB report also referred to other incidents in Cairo, Turkey and North Korea. In May 2016, Egyptian civil aviation authorities sent an internal alert warning pilots about malicious attempts at GPS signal jamming near Cairo airport.

Several reports filed with NASA’s ASRS between 2014 and 2015 feature Part 121 air carrier pilots reporting concerns with GPS signal losses near Mexico City airport (MMMX). According to one pilot’s excerpt:

“While conducting the RNAV (GPS) OR ILS Rwy 05R approach to MMMX in VMC conditions, I noticed as we flew over MAVEK (SMO VOR) intersection the FMC alerted ‘GPS INVALID L, R.’ This occurred perhaps one mile from MAVEK. As we were in VMC we continued a stable approach to an uneventful landing. I strongly suspect GPS jamming is once again occurring in the vicinity of the Mateo VOR.”

Drones have not been exempt from GPS signal jamming either. In December 2015, for example, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) publicly confirmed that the drones it flies for surveillance purposes along the U.S.-Mexico border have experienced spoofing and jamming of GPS signals caused by what they believe to be Mexico-based drug cartels.

“At Spirent we have deployed interference detectors worldwide and what we’re seeing is that there does seem to be a trend in detecting more jamming events,” Buesnel told Avionics. “We see that there is a lot of low-level interference, which is not deliberate but can interfere with GPS systems.”

Buesnel says that cheap cigarette-lighter jammers available for purchase over the internet are being bought by people who want to stop employers from tracking their movements within certain jobs. Although it is illegal to possess such a device in the U.S., in other countries the legislation is less strict. “In the U.K., for example, whilst it is illegal to operate a GPS jammer, it is legal to own one,” he says. "

Iran has purchased at least four Rezonas-N VHF over-the-horizon backscatter air defense radars from Russia. These have been constructed in two variants. The larger Sepehr [Sky] radars are formed in a quadrilateral antenna array about 100 meters on a side, with very tall transmitter towers on the corners. The Qadir [Almighty] radars are smaller quadrilateral antenna arrays, rather less than 70 meters on a side and nearly filled with buildings, with a single central tall transmitter tower. The Sepehr are rather more elaborate in appearance, in extremely isolated locations, while the Qadir are simple stations, plopped down in rural farmland. Between them all, they seem to provide extensive coverage of South West Asia, with overlapping coverage of Iranian airspace.

OTH radar systemOne of the ways to detect and detect surface targets far from the use of over-the-horizon [OTH] radars, which are also referred to as super horizons, horizons and cosmic systems. The cosmic radar will radiate HF waves to the ionosphere, ranging from 85 km to 600 km. By exposing the waves to this layer, which leads to their return to the earth, wide range can be covered. These radars are suitable for monitoring remote areas of 500-4000 kilometers or more in vast areas.

These radars have a network of transmitter and receiver antennas and, due to the network nature and expansion of their systems, have no high transport and handling capability and are used locally in a fixed location. The civilian use of these radars in such matters as oceanography and maritime traffic control and their military use in the early warning system of ballistic missile and cruise missile defense systems.

Cosmic radars are usually less complicated in terms of hardware than radar with higher frequency, but are very complex in terms of software and processing. The accuracy of these radar measurements is not as great as radar, and their use is only in the early alert section. A country that uses the cosmic radar can actually monitor the movements of the surrounding region on its soil at a moment's notice.

The Sepehr radar, which is also the longest range radar in the country, and according to defense officials, its usual range is 2,500 kilometers, which can change from 800 kilometers to 3000 kilometers. The radar designed and built in recent years has been operationally ready for operation, with enough to be deployed in different parts of the country.

Anyone know anything about Iran's Over the Horizon Radar?

  8. Hi may disagree with me on this one, but I was dumbfounded at these videos of 'supposedly' survivors of the Iranian Canadian victims of this Ukrainian flight. The short of it...FAKE watch these vids and you can see the crisis acting. I wasn't expecting this at all. Listen to the description of a victim(s) credentials all highly educated, three languages etc. along with wiping away tears that do not appear. I may be wrong but it is in your face fake to me. It is all to demonize Iran. The fact that this flight was to go on to Kiev, but in this article says 'home' meaning Canada? In pics there is many personal items not even touched by fire including picture album? And the worse...NO MAYDAY was sent! This is FAKE and it's going to take much more for me to see otherwise. WARNING DRAMA ALERT!!!

    1. Whats the problem ? All Iranians are DR. or Professors and the survivors dont shed any tears when grieving . Seems legit to me.

    2. And here is my biggest question...Why was the Ukrainian flight not grounded? Even in this report by Presstv they state:
["...Iran’s nation's armed forces said in the statement that Tehran was on the highest level of alert "in response to threats by the criminal American president and military commanders" to hit a large number of Iranian targets.

"In the hours after the missile strikes, flights by the warplanes of the terrorist American forces around the country increased, and some reports of aerial targets heading toward strategic centers of the country were received by defense units while a number of targets appeared on some radar screens which raised the sensitivity of the air defense networks.

“Under such sensitive and critical conditions, the Ukrainian Airlines flight 752 took off from the Imam Khomeini airport and while rotating, it was placed completely in the position of approaching a sensitive military center in the altitude and trajectory of an enemy target..."]

Not picking any side (even though I blame US)... I can't side when I'm looking for the truth. So when there is contradiction or many answers glossed over, my truth meter goes off.

    3. I have an easy explanation for you Wallflower, it was a trap.Heres my post to another site.

" Many of you still seemed perplexed as to why Iran allowed commercial flights to go on during such a potentially tense time. Let me make it clear for everyone, they were tricked by the ZioAmericans. Basically, the Iranians were allowed to get their " face saving attack " on the Americans while thinking this would be the end of the whole episode. Little did they suspect that the US had prepared the Ukrainian plane scenario followed by instantaneous protests. The Iranians walked into a trap. "

      - Swiss Back Channel Helped Defuse U.S.-Iran Crisis -
The U.S. sent an encrypted fax via the Swiss Embassy in Tehran urging Iran not to escalate, followed by a flurry of back and forth messages -

  9. @ Mieszko
Thank you but I addressed this to Penny. If it seems legit to you then don't reply! "DON'T SHED ANY TEARS WHEN GRIEVING"
Really? That's not what I saw in every video of the Funeral for Gen. Soleimani!!! THE MASSES WERE CRYING AND BEATING THEIR CHESTS! Apparently you haven't seen them.

    1. Hi wallflower and Mieszko..

I wonder if Mieszko was being facetious? but I don't know?

I'm going to watch the video tomorrow for sure- Had a busy day, but, want to say it's a dam good question as to why the plane even left the airport!

Who the heck green lighted it's flight? Cause I don't get it either?

    2. " I wonder if Mieszko was being facetious? but I don't know? "

Of course I was, Iranians are human after all.

  10. wallflower: I watched all the videos at the linked cbc article
mixed bag of emotions expressed. Not sure what to say...

I do know that Toronto has an Iranian community clustered around one area- I can't really speak to other parts of Canada..

there's nearly 100,000 Iranians living in and around the Toronto area
