How to unplug from the grid

A rather lengthy read, but informative. Silverfish, our resident self-sufficiency expert will hopefully share some thoughts on the subject? Or some thoughts on this article anyway.

How to unplug from the grid

I found this interesting

there are now approximately 200,000 off-grid households in the US and increasing by a third every year for the past decade.

nearly 30,000 grid-connected US households supplement their supply with renewables

and this:
The simplest way to tap into this is to use a solar collector

  1. Where is the link Pen?

My sis and I are going to buy some land. We are formulating our plan.

Her hubby will bake bread and do carpentry. He is very good at room service and will keep the wine flowing.

I will be in charge of security, chickens and of course canning and perserving.

My sister will no doubt be the monarchy.

  2. Okay - sorry, you've got it up now!!

    Thanks.

We were thinking a mix of solar, wind and hydro (if our land has moving water).

  3. Solar electric isn't cost effective and it isn't environmentally friendly by a long shot. Its good to have a bit for emergencies.

I would be making my own fuel and using that in a generator. You have to grow stuff to make alchohol but you could get a lot more energy this way and exactly when you need it.

Passive solar is good, but to a point. We are to high in Altitude for it to be very practical in homes except in specific circumstances, but to help get off the grid it would be good.

Ground source heat pumping is great option but expensive at start.

Hydro would be interesting but you need the altitude difference for the potential energy. A flowing river requires a flood plane to get you raised water. Otherwise you won't get much power from a flowing river but few watts could be substantial if you heat with wood. (You could run a TV with that 8-).

A well insulated structure becomes really important.
