Updated! Trump to Order Plan for Syria "Safe Zones": Document

Does "safe zone" No Fly Zone
This is a familiar theme....

Admittedly this has me concerned:

President Donald Trump is expected to order the Pentagon and State Department to produce a plan in coming days for setting up “safe zones” for refugees in Syria and neighboring countries, according to a document seen by Reuters, a move that could risk escalation of U.S. military involvement in Syria’s civil war.
The draft executive order awaiting Trump’s signature signaled the new administration was preparing a step that Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama long resisted, fearing the potential for being pulled deeper into the conflict and the threat of clashes between U.S. and Russian warplanes over Syria
"The Secretary of State, in conjunction with the Secretary of Defense, is directed within 90 days of the date of this order to produce a plan to provide safe areas in Syria and in the surrounding region in which Syrian nationals displaced from their homeland can await firm settlement, such as repatriation or potential third-country resettlement," the draft order said.

Creation of safe zones, if Trump decides to do so, could ratchet up U.S. military involvement in Syria and mark a major departure from Obama’s approach. If Trump decided to enforce “no fly” restrictions over such areas, it would require increased U.S. or allied air power. It could also demand some type of ground forces to provide security.
Still, the document gave no details on what would constitute a safe zone, exactly where they might be set up and who would defend them. Jordan, Turkey and other neighboring countries already host millions of Syrian refugees.

When I posted the above item, yesterday, the news was literally ten minutes old- It seems in the last several hours Mr Trump has confirmed the report:

Trump says he will 'absolutely do safe zones' in Syria
"I'll absolutely do safe zones in Syria for the people," he (Trump) added, without giving details.
 Times of Israel:
In an interview with ABC News later Wednesday, Trump said he will “absolutely do safe zones in Syria” for people fleeing violence there.
“The safe zone mandate was tucked into the text of a draft version of a White House executive order, which bans refugees from Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and other conflict zones from emigrating to the United States,” the Washington Times reported on Wednesday.
 From earlier:

  1. Hi Pen, I'm not concerned.

The article is from Reuters - Strike One
There are no named sources - Strike Two
It is a Draft document - Strike Three

  2. Hi james:

The only saving grace for this news is that's it is a draft document- could be changed? Or not.

In this case I'm less concerned with the no named source because it's "according to a document seen by Reuters" There would be no named source for the info only the document.

As for Reuters? All media obfuscates. Alt and MSM- but I'm pretty comfortable with my skills/ability to discern.

What bothers me is, this is not the type of document/news I would expect from Trump given his usual talk.

Rather I would have expected- join forces with Assad to fight terror- shore up the elected government- a move to work with Russia to secure Syria's territory and I've yet to see anything like that... instead the above document which has likely been leaked to the media... Intentionally
causes me concern for a few reasons:

Is it a test the waters?
    A moment of truth?
    something else?

Not sure which, but it's something that should be kept an eye on- because it could be a very telling sign of the direction Trump is heading

    ty again james

    1. What bothers me is, this is not the type of document/news I would expect from Trump given his usual talk

      Exactly, Pen.

  3. More troops in Afghan
More assistance in iraq - ignoring the ongoing deployments (Haditha, FOBs, Mosul) and Iraq threats to sue the US under the Saudi targeted 9/11 legilsation
    Syria No fly zone

Petraeus: 'It's not too late' for a no-fly zone in Syria

Russians on leaked draft constitution - same as 22May16

    Rojava autonomy.

"The Kurdish cultural self-ruling systems and its organizations use both the Arabic and Kurdish languages equally," the document reads.

    Central bank
"The People’s Assembly will be responsible for … decisions on war and peace issues, the removal of the president from the office, appointment of the members of the Supreme Constitutional Court, appointment of the head of the Syrian National Bank and his dismissal from office."

    Like South Sudan?

And a lesson from the diplomatic dwarf

    1. And with Russia layered air defense in Syria and recent developments in Eurasia, Petraeus is being optimistic

    2. Russian-prepared draft of Syrian constitution proposes creation of Kurdish autonomy as part of unitary Syria - source

Countrywide referendum and unilateral declaration already. How does that work other than by the barrel of a gun?

More radars in Crimea with stealth detection

    3. Days before trump comment and the overtures to increase cooperation with Turkey

    4. "Syrian Kurds don't need Russian approval for federation. We liberated the West Kurdistan by fighting terrorists and Assad"

  4. I've updated the post with the latest on what was a breaking news item yesterday..

Mr Trump apparently spoke the words "I'll absolutely do safe zones in Syria for the people"

Just how will they be done?

I noticed yesterday it was all over the news that Bana had written to Mr Trump about saving children in Syria- she's quite a humanitarian- NOT!

"The complete handwritten letter, which was written shortly before Trump’s inauguration..." and the media sits on it until after the inauguration?

And she'll be the Donald's best friend if he helps Syrian children.... given the past history of Bana's tweets coinciding with NATO/UN/US moves I was a bit suspicious... but brushed it off--- Maybe I should rethink that?

  5. Seems Trump is another puppet like Mr. Hope and Change. Fake changes, fake presidents.

  6. Well.... Now we see the real Donald Drumpf in action... A Jew supporter first and foremost, and just obeying what his criminal Jewish masters want which is the destruction of Syria for the Greater Israel psychotic project....

Many of us said "wait and see" as to where Drumpf stands... And now we see it clearly

  7. Penny,
I check Sevastopol blog about once a week using yandex.

He has up an article about the opening of three gates by ISIS to detur progress of 'kurds'Arab fources.

    the URL not translated

I looked at the limited sites I now keep and saw nothing (2 were kurd sites)
so I went to his source which is Izvestia .ru
    again, Yandex to confirm
thought you might want to see it.
who has had a slight relapse, darnit

  8. Safe zones could be innocuous, just a place to house returning refugees. Is that a bad thing? I know we need to look at the subterfuge angle, but it might be a way for the US to actually help with something. Syria would run these camps, not the US setting up a power center. We are in the Trump era now, we need to consider that things will now right themselves.

  9. Trump is talking to Putin via phone on Saturday 1/28. Hopefully Putin and Russia will be transparent about details of their conversation. Hopefully one or both parties will be transparent about the conversation. We shall see.

  10. Hi Dharma and Dwarddo: Safe zones could be innocuous. Or not. They have most often equaled no fly zones. That's not good. So, as Dwarddo said "We shall see"

  11. A safe zone is horrible. It is worse than a no fly zone, as it includes an NFZ, but also thousands of boots on the ground, which in Syria would be an occupation.
Incidently, they want this safe zone to be in north Syria, the area that YPG has annexed from the central state.
Ehat the Pentagon want's is in essance a PKK safe zone on Turkeys border. This is operation provide comfort 2.0. The establishment of a Kurdish federation like the KRG.
Thankfully, on twitter it is reported that Turkey has received the US offer with scepticism.
