Mossad accused of complicity in assassination of top Hamas official in Dubai
Dubai has widened its search for the killers of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh on Wednesday with officials confirming at least six of the Hamas commander's assassins remain unaccounted for. Yesterday, police in Dubai issued international arrest warrants for eleven suspects in the case. It is now believed the team behind the murder numbered at least seventeen.
Police in the United Arab Emirates described the killing as meticulously planned, with the hit squad arriving on different flights and checking into different hotels.Gordon Brown has called for a 'full investigation' into how fraudulent British passports were obtained by the suspects.
The forged passports have fueled already widespread speculation in the region that Mossad was behind the assassination. If confirmed, the allegations will trigger an Israeli diplomatic row with Britain and the three other European countries whose passports were used - Ireland, Germany and France.
This use of foreign stolen or falsified passports by Israel for assassination is nothing new.
This piece, from the Guardian, looks at the history of this practice.
Thought the tone of the article is apologetic, sort of a - just something that has to be done shoulder shruggin' kind of response.
Shadowy and deadly - the long arm of the Mossad
Mossad has has a long history of carrying out clandestine operations, including several spectacular assassinations. Much remains secret but cases that are documented have involved large teams of agents using false or stolen passports to disguise their Israeli origins.
Canadian's have previously fallen victim to this abuse of their identities.
Flashback: Canada's Passport: It get's around, and not just with Canadians!
Oh and Canada's response, well read that piece and you'll get the idea.
As for all the noise Gordon Brown is making about wanting a full investigation. Much ado about nothing. Just like the piece from the Guardian, Mr. Brown will shrug his shoulders and move along.
Here is an opinion from Israel, which sums up what I think will come of this-nothing.
Israel has nothing to worry about over Dubai killing
As such, unless dramatic evidence is found to definitively prove an Israeli connection, it is likely that the State of Israel will emerge from this affair unblemished and the Mossad will continue enjoying a reputation of fearless determination and nearly unstoppable capabilities. While I wouldn't say Israel will emerge unblemished.....Israel is already pretty blemished, and this won't help. Let's say, everyone will turn a blind eye. And the Mossad will indeed, as before, carry on with it's agenda.
